Site #1

Ok stop number 1 is Azteca. After good yelp reviews I decided to grab my bf and make him come with me. So, first the location is actually very easy to find and parking wasn't bad at all. It's pretty small, but they weren't crowded so we were seated quickly. The waiter was knowledgeable about the food and took our order promptly. We both ordered burritos, one chicken and one beef, and rice. I'm a stickler about rice so I was interested to see what there's was like. Another VERY important factor about Mexican food is the chips and salsa. Theirs was pretty good, I've had better and I've had worse. It was fresh and the chips were crunchy. I ordered a margarita and my boyfriend had a Corona, standard Mexican food drinks. Ok, back to the food. It comes out in a timely manner and we are excited to just devour these burritos. Unfortunately I was very underwhelmed :( it was sub-par compared to the reviews. It was pretty expensive for food that was very bland and small portioned. I have not been back since and I don't really recommend it for experienced Mexican food eaters, or really anyone for that matter. Sorry Azteca but, Overall I give you a 3.5 (1 being low and 10 being high). The only aspect keeping this place above a 2 was the service. Ugh, still need to find a decent place that is relatively close, meaning Honolulu area.

  1. Love the idea of chasing the best Mexican Food in Honolulu! It will definitely be a challenge as there are very few of them around that are truly authentic. I've been to Azteca a few times, but there prices went up in the last few years and honestly the service for me is a hit or miss! :/ My friend moved here from Chicago about 5 years ago & has been on the hunt for good Mexican since! She expressed to me on numerous occasions how different the food was here, it was nothing like home! I told her of course, nothings going to be like home... but we could definitely try a few places out! Let me tell you how bad I felt seeing the disappointment on her face after those few meals... After working at as a waitress at a Mexican restaurant on Kauai, La Bamba, I really didn't think it would be that difficult to find a decent place here on Oahu. Then I realized what she was talking about (and how clueless I was about authentic Mexican) when we visited Chicago in 2009... Oh yes, I finally got a real taste of what authentic food was all about! I wish you all the best on your journey & look forward to reading more posts about the places you visit! Here are a few other Mexican restaurants I've tried that were pretty decent... now keep in mind these suggestions are coming from someone who has lived in Hawaii their whole life! Hahaha... *Serg's* in Manoa next to Boston's Pizza & *Los Chaparros* off Beretania St. before McCully & *Mexico* in Kalihi
